The eunuch spymaster of King's Landing, Varys was born a slave in Lys, mutilated by a sorcerer as a boy, and clawed his way from the gutters of Free Cities to a seat on the small council. His 'little birds' — children who hear everything — whisper to him from every corner of the realm and beyond. Powdered, soft-spoken, and endlessly courteous, he claims to serve not a king but the realm itself. What Varys actually wants is the question no one can answer.
