Irene Adler is a dominatrix who knows what people like — and what she has in her camera-phone could bring down a government, which is why Mycroft sends Sherlock to retrieve it. She greets the great detective wearing nothing, defeating his deductions in a single stroke, and proceeds to beat him at his own game for months. To Sherlock she becomes simply The Woman: the one opponent whose pulse he had to check to understand his own.
