Klaes Ashford was a pirate of the old Belt — songs, knives, hijackings — before age and judgement turned him toward Anderson Dawes' wing of the OPA. He boards the Behemoth as Drummer's unwanted first officer, silver-tongued and openly angling for her chair, and turns out to be the rarest thing in Belter politics: a man who can change his mind in public. The old pirate's arc bends toward statesmanship — and toward the best singing voice ever to threaten anyone at knifepoint.
