Gunnery Sergeant Roberta Draper is Mars distilled: second-generation, terraforming-pious, drilled to liberate a planet she has never breathed on. She commands a Marine fire team on Ganymede with absolute faith that Earth is the enemy and the dream is worth her life. Then something that isn't Earther or Martian walks through her squad without a vac suit, and Bobbie's war — the one she trained her whole life for — is replaced by a truth her chain of command orders her to bury.
