Who is Gilbert in The Sandman?
The gentleman of Fiddler's Green, on holiday · The Dreaming
Gilbert (The gentleman of Fiddler's Green, on holiday) is a character in The Sandman, part of The Dreaming. Gilbert is a stout, courtly gentleman with a sword-cane, an Edwardian vocabulary and a secret hiding in plain sight: he is Fiddler's Green, a place — the Dreaming's gentlest meadow — that put on a waistcoat to see what being human felt like. He appoints himself Rose Walker's protector through the season's serial-killer underworld, and his finale choice (returning to be a place again, so the realm heals) is the show's most graceful sacrifice: the holiday ends; the kindness doesn't.
