Toda Mariko (The translator with a death wish) is a character in Shōgun, part of Toranaga's Court. Lady Toda Mariko is the daughter of the most infamous traitor of the age — Akechi Jinsai, who killed his own liege — and has carried that shame for fourteen years, forbidden by duty even the seppuku she longs for. A convert of the Portuguese fathers, flawless in their tongue, she is assigned by Toranaga to translate for the barbarian pilot. Mariko serves with a stillness that is not peace: she is a woman holding a war inside, ordered to keep living it.
